Sump Pump Installation, Replacement & Battery Backup

A sump pump is your basement's last line of defense, and it usually fails at the worst time: heavy rain, a power outage, or spring snowmelt. Finney's Waterproofing installs and replaces sump pumps and adds battery backup so you aren't depending on one pump and the power grid.

When to Replace Your Sump Pump

• It runs constantly, or cycles on and off rapidly

• It's loud, rattling, or vibrating

• It's been in service a long time. Many pumps wear out somewhere around a decade, depending on use and quality

• You see rust, a cracked basin, or a float switch that sticks

• It doesn't discharge any water when you pour a bucket into the pit

• You've had a flood or a near-miss

What We Do

• Sump pump installation, including the pit and the discharge

• Replacement of existing pumps

• Battery backup systems, so the pump keeps working when the power is out

• Interior drain tile with a sump, when a pump is the only thing between you and standing water. See Basement Waterproofing.

• Discharge placement that sends water away from the foundation, never somewhere it can drain right back

Michigan Winter Issue: Frozen Discharge Lines

If the pipe that carries water outside freezes or clogs with ice, the pump can run and run without moving any water. A discharge line that slopes away from the house, an outlet that isn't buried in a snowdrift, and an open-ended discharge all help. Ask us to look at your discharge before winter.

Sump Pump FAQ

Why is my sump pump running constantly?

Possible causes include a lot of groundwater, a stuck float, a check valve that has failed so water falls back in, or a pump that's too small. During very heavy rain, constant running is normal. In dry weather it suggests a problem.

How long do sump pumps last?

Often around 7 to 10 years, depending on quality and how hard the pump works.

Do I need a battery backup?

If you have finished space, stored items, or a history of outages during storms, a backup is inexpensive insurance compared with a flood. Keep in mind that backups have limited run times.

Can I test it myself?

Yes. Pour a bucket of water into the pit. The float should rise, the pump should start, and the water should go out the discharge line.

Where should the discharge line go?

Well away from the foundation, downhill, and not toward a neighbor's yard.
